470 Intro to Cyanotype

Cyanotype is a photo-imaging process that was invented in the late 1800’s by Sir John Herschel, an astronomer and scientist. It produces prints that are distinctively dark greenish-blue. The resulting imagery consists of white silhouetted forms set against a distinct blue hues. Contemporary artists such as Robert Raushenberg, Yves Klein, The Starns Twins, and Jessica Ferguson have used the medium to create distinctively dramatic and surprising works of visual art. The workshop will begin with an introductory demonstration to the wet cyanotype process, examples of cyanotype printing on cloth and bags, and a discussion of different materials one could use for application. The remaining time will be devoted to printing, with additional digital negatives provided upon request. This is an opportunity for artists to expand on their visual repertoire of images while learning and exploring a “new” and exciting rediscovered technique.

Students will receive a packet of instructions on the cyanotype process. Cell phones are required, cameras are recommended. A $10 materials fee is required.
