Ever wonder how some artists make the leap from Realism to Abstraction? In this course we will explore hands-on how abstract painters use a range of sources for their work, from nature to the figure and beyond. Looking at masterworks throughout the last century by artists such as Picasso, Piet Mondrain, Lee Krasner and Joan Mitchell, we will discuss the transformation from painting as objective representation to painting as subjective expression. In doing so, the formal elements of line, shape, and color will be freed from their role as traditional descriptive devices, opening new avenues for creating surprising works of art. Acrylics are recommended but students are free to use watercolor or oil paint and must be familiar with their chosen materials.
