312 Color Theory

This class will explore the dynamics of color theory as they pertain to painting mediums. Through demonstration and exercise, students will explore harmonious color relationships from both an objective and subjective point of view. With the color wheel as a point of departure, students will explore the dynamics of color and hue with a strong emphasis on the theory of Johannes Itten’s “Elements of Color.” Content will be based on Itten’s analysis of six kinds of color contrast: hue, light-dark, cold-warm, complementary, simultaneous, and saturation. This class is designed to provide students with a more expansive and expressive view of color in its application to content and form.
