308 Life Drawing – Charcoal and Graphite to Painted Composition WORKSHOP

Drawing directly from life is the most rewarding form of drawing. The interaction between artist and subject has no equal when it comes to engagement of the senses. Beginning with life drawings, this workshop will start with one-minute poses leading to longer poses, culminating in a finished piece, which may be used to paint over or as a reference. Instruction will include the use of negative space, alternating convex and concave lines in the anatomy of the model and careful observation of the breaks between shadow, light and reflected light. We will also explore using elements in the room to help us form a composition of the model in space. Special attention will be given to the placement of the figure or figures on the page paying attention to scale when creating multiple figures. Students may use charcoal, a chammy, and a soft 9B water soluble graphite stick on paper as a means of developing more finished painted compositions or other graphic mediums.
