306 Understanding Perspective

A shortcoming for many new students’ artwork is the misunderstanding of perspective in their paintings. In this classroom study, basic rules of perspective will be discussed and drawn and applied. We start with simple line art to learn the foundation of both one- and two- point perspective in how it works in all phases of your art. We then will progress to creating monochromatic studies in your choice of medium, and experience painting with light and dark values to show perspective, and light source (how shadows work). Actual still lives will be incorporated to work from as well, so that we can see, firsthand how perspective is in real life. The instructor will provide demos along with instruction of the class. Additional tools to your supplies should include a large pad of paper, straight edge (yardstick/t square), string and pins. Whether painting still lives, outdoor scenes and even in figure painting, having an understanding of correct perspective will be a real bonus to your artwork.
