Stephen Andrus
Dr. Andrus' sculptures
are comprised primarily of plexiglas: "I first ran
into plexiglas in making simple experimental equipment in the
laboratory...as you drilled holes, you could watch the drill
bit advancing into the depths...I came to realize that a
smooth polished surface reflects light internally as well as
externally." copper: "Copper has an ancient
and honorable lineage. Frequently, I made assemblages of
patinated copper, backed by wood or plexiglas and mounted in
antique wooden boxes." stone: "....I found
myself cutting shallow basins in the top surfaces of cobbles
as receptacles for water..." bamboo: "Ever
since buying a simple bamboo fishing pole as a young boy, I
have been making things out of bamboo. Structurally, it is a
miracle of design...it is considered a grass and yet, ...it is
used in heavy construction."
