Gallery Artist Membership Information

The SOUTH SHORE ART CENTER offers a special category of membership for exhibiting artists. We invite you to join us in a venture that benefits you in exposure, referrals, and sales while enabling the Art Center to serve the expanding cultural needs of the South Shore and eastern Massachusetts.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP: A Gallery Artist member must be a professional, consistently working in his or her field, with a body of work large enough to meet a frequent showing schedule. Gallery Artist exhibitions are open to all genres and media.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Applicants submit portfolios to a selection jury meeting in April or October. Artists should deliver seven or eight original works, although framing and pedestals are not mandatory for the critique. In addition, a slide sheet of up to twelve different images is strongly suggested. Slides should represent images, not presented as part of the original works. Applicants should prepare a checklist with artist’s name, title and year of work, medium and dimensions. All slides must be clearly labeled with the same information, and also marked to indicate front side and top edge. The jurying is a blind process, but applicants should include a resume and artist statement for use by the staff.

ORGANIZATION: The SOUTH SHORE ART CENTER is a non-profit educational institution governed by a volunteer board of directors. The membership incorporated in 1958, and a copy of the bylaws is available on request. The Art Center serves as a focal point for the arts on the South Shore of Boston and draws its members and potential buyers from the entire New England area. Since 1987 the Art Center has been housed in a two-story modernist facility designed by Vcevold Strekalovsky. The building is located in a high-traffic area of Cohasset Center and consists on the ground floor of an entranceway gallery and gift counter, a reception area and office, the Bancroft Gallery and the Dillon Gallery, with classroom studios, a photographic darkroom and student gallery on the second floor. Satellite locations for exhibiting artists include the Landmark Building in Boston, the South Shore Conservatory in Hingham, and the Paul Pratt Library in Cohasset.

PRIVILEGES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Membership as a Gallery Artist includes the opportunity to exhibit in group shows in the Dillon Gallery or solo or group shows at a satellite location on a rotating schedule; and referral of buyers to the Artist as appropriate. These opportunities are in addition to all privileges of individual membership. The Artist will pay the annual dues designated for Gallery Artists, which currently are $45 per year. Gallery Artists are encouraged to donate a minimum of ten hours per year to the Art Center, and those who do so will receive a full rebate of annual dues applied to the following year’s renewal of membership.

ART SALES: Gallery Artists receive 60% of the sale price of works sold in Art Center galleries or satellite locations, with the exception of the Paul Pratt Library where Gallery Artists receive 70%. Gallery Artists pay to the Art Center, as a commission, 15% of the price of any work sold to a buyer when the sale occurs primarily as a result of a referral from the staff or a member of the Board of Directors.

GALLERY ARTIST SELECTION JURY meets in April and October. Please call the office for specific dates.

Pick-up dates will be scheduled by the Art Center office. Call Sarah Hannan, Executive Director, with any questions.
