Artist in Residence Program
This spring, printmaker and teacher Danguole Kuolas and volunteers Libby Allard, Sharon Daly and Susan Walker will complete an impressive schedule of Wednesday morning Artist in Residence programs at which we have welcomed approximately 1,200 students since September. Upper elementary level students from schools all over the South Shore region have visited the Art Center and had the opportunity to meet with Danguole, learn about many aspects of printmaking, view the exhibition in the main gallery and make a unique blockprint to take home. This program is offered free of charge and is sponsored in part by South Shore Music Circus. If you’re interested in bringing students to participate in the program next year, please contact Heather Collins, 781-383-2787, x.15 or email hcollins@ssac.org.
Looking at Art
We lead off the spring with a most exciting and unusual exhibition, “Reflections in Exile: Five Contemporary African Artists Respond to Social Injustice,” on display from April 4–May11. Organized in collaboration with the National Center of Afro-American Artists in Roxbury (where the exhibition will be on display this summer), this important exhibit offers a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages to explore the social issues facing many African countries today through video presentations, paintings, sculptures, installations and graphic design. The five artists currently live and work in New England and New York and we plan to offer extensive educational programming, including an Educators’ Preview reception on April 3 (3:30–5:00 p.m.) and a panel discussion on Sunday, April 13 (2:00 p.m.) to which all are invited. We hope that many school groups will be able to view this important exhibit and we are offering free field trips. Please contact Heather Collins, 781-383-2787 x.15 or hcollins@ssac.org. as soon as possible.
Our second exhibition this spring is the ever-popular middle school/jr. high school art show “Art Forum,” (May 14–25) which showcases the work of students in schools across the South Shore. This exciting tour of art produced in a variety of media from schools in this region provides a unique opportunity to view the talent of local youth artists. An opening reception/party will be held on May 14 from 4:30–6:30 p.m.
Scout, Special Interest Groups
We welcome boy and girl scout troops and any special interest groups to visit the Art Center after school and incorporate an art experience into your programming this spring. We are happy to discuss various alternatives and will design a special program to fulfill badge requirements. Please contact Heather Collins, 781-383-2787,
if interested. An exciting addition to your troop’s activity schedule! We will provide an arts tie-in to whatever subject is being discussed. We love challenges, so name your topic and we’ll respond with an arts experience.
PDPs (Professional Development Points):
All of our courses and workshops are available for professional development. Certificates of attendance will be provided corresponding to the number of hours of the workshop or course. Teachers may bundle these hours with those of other organizations and submit them to their schools for PDPs. In addition, the Art Center will arrange a professional development workshop in a variety of media for art department in-service days. Please contact Heather Collins for more information.
If you’re interested in any of the above programs, please contact Heather Collins at

We look forward to hearing from you!
