300 Basic Drawing—Judy Rossman
The ability to draw is not inherited, it is a learned skill. That ability is directly related to one’s observational skills. Being able to see the basic structure of all objects is the first step (similar to reading music). Through a series of exercises, assignments, and homework, students will strengthen their observational and drawing skills. Composition, value studies, line, texture and color will broaden their understanding of the drawing process. This class can accommodate both beginner and intermediate levels in a supportive environment with lots of one-on-one instruction. Continuing students welcome.

Bonney Goldstein
520 Finding Your Voice
Friday, July 24 through Sunday, July 26, 10:00–4:00
$275M $300NM (there will be a materials fee payable directly to the instructor)

This class is designed as an explorative journey through all the rules and voices of authority that we as painters try to follow to create "art".  The aim is to try on the styles of our favorite painters and then move on to develop own methods and a personal vocabulary that expresses our own message.

Students can work with the medium that they would normally work with, but try different surfaces and different techniques in hope of overcoming that little voice in your head that is always pointing out right from wrong. We will work on many small pieces over short periods of time and develop our own elements that mark our work as unique and individualistic. This class will also include an introduction to different oil paint mediums, such as marble dust, oil based gesso, cold wax and alkyds.

New Hampshire artist Bonney Goldstein has been a painter for over 40 years working in oil on canvas, wood and paper. She studied at the Arts Student League in New York and Denver.  Her work can be found in galleries in New York, Colorado, New Hampshire, Iowa, Maine and Massachusetts. Visit www.bonneygoldstein.com

Josette Urso 521
Collage to Painting
Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2, 10:00–4:00
$275M $300NM

This course takes a lively approach to exploring the interrelationship between collage and painting. Students will employ the historically unstructured medium of collage as a means of sketching and as a springboard for ideas in painting. Work will begin simply then become progressively more complex as students are urged to push the limits of the mediums and their ideas. As the work done in one medium assists and influences one’s vision in the other, the collaboration between process and concept will encourage the production of less planned and more unexpected images.

New York artist Josette Urso has exhibited her work extensively including in NYC, at the Drawing Center, DFN Gallery, Julie Saul Gallery, lyonswier Gallery, and Metaphor Contemporary; in Maine at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport; and in Florida at the Von Liebig Art Center in Naples. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including, in 2009 Yaddo and in 2008, a second Pollock-Krasner Foundation award and a residency at the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus in Germany. She traveled to Taiwan for a residency at STOCK20 in 2006 and to Cambodia with the AIEP American Artist’s Abroad program in 2004. Other awards include those from the NEA, Art Matters, Ballinglen Arts Foundation, and Ucross. She currently teaches at Cooper Union in New York. www.josetteurso.com

Gretchen Halpert
505 Field Sketching/Nature Journaling
Thursday, August 6 through Sunday, August 9, 10:00–4:00
$345M $370NM

Drawing on-site serves many purposes. Observing subjects in their natural environment offers greater understanding of nature and its creatures. Drawing them increases observation and illustration skills and allows time to connect with nature, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. It is also a way of collecting information to take back to the studio for more “finished” drawings.

In this four-day workshop, we will work outdoors in a variety of habitats and learn various methods for capturing nature. In case of inclement weather, we will bring the outdoors into the studio. Both black and white and color techniques will be taught, as well as composition and writing. Published and personal nature journals as well as nature itself will serve as inspiration and instruction. If you enjoy the outdoors and you like to draw and learn, this workshop is for you. Open to all skill levels

Gretchen Halpert completed a degree in Botany, graduate work in biological illustration and a certificate in scientific and technical illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design/CE where she taught for fourteen years.  Halpert has taught extensively, at RISD/CE, Brown U. and Wheaton College and has offered workshops around the US and abroad.

Halpert is on the executive board of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) as past-president, is on the advisory board of the Guild of Asian Botanical Artists and is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists.  Her drawings have appeared in books, journals and scientific publications, at zoos and nature preserves. She currently resides in the southern Finger Lakes of New York.

 Antonia Ramis Miguel
529 Portrait Workshop
Wednesday, August 12 through Friday, August 14, 10:00–4:00
$295M $320NM (model fee included)

In this workshop, students will experience the excitement of working with three different styles of portraiture: abstract, expressionism, and realism. The class will begin working from photographs and will finish with models. Through quick sketches, breaking down features to get the fundamental lines that form a face, students will use the sketches for the abstract work. Bold colours and brushwork will be used to experiment with expressionism. Students will work in a style of realism in which they will observe realistic skin tones, volume, proportions, light and shadow to get a true likeness of the model. There will be individual attention as well as directions for the class as a whole. All levels are welcome.

Trained in Europe, Antonia Ramis Miguel has been painting for more than 20 years. Her work has been shown in her native Spain, in Vienna ( Austria), Washington, D.C . , and in London, where she currently lives. www.antoniaramismiguel.com
