Juror Statement from Stephanie Walker Most of us remember as children, being presented with paper and crayons, pens, scissors, paint, glue and pencils to create our masterworks! Because it is familiar, it represents the essential, the basic; the fundamentals to which we can all relate.
There is also an immediacy to paper that renders the work raw and intimate. It’s that very quality that makes the work appealing; not only is the actual material delicate but it conveys a sense of emotional delicacy as well.
One standout example is by the artist Stan Kaplan in two prints titled, “Cornfield” & “Slaveship.” Although prints could be considered rather primitive in today’s high-tech world, the simple black and white images are powerful and sophisticated.
Equally compelling were the works “Yellow Ribbon I” & ”White Shirts” by Euy-Kyung Suh& Marina Del Rosario Huang, respectively. The choice of paper, in both cases, over any other material, uniquely informs each work of art. They appear innovative and even cutting edge in their untraditional use of paper, but the techniques are still grounded in the basic and elemental, helping to draw the viewer in. Add to that their tactile qualities and you have the raw, delicate, beautiful immediacy of paper.
