I am a visual artist and writer.
For the last 5 summers the cross disciplines of etching, journaling and memoir writing have been created at a printmaking studio and farmhouse-residence settled in the Tuscan hills north of Lucca, Italy.
Having long dreamt of travel but occupied with other choices and circumstances, I never ventured far from home. As my children grew to adulthood and I grew hopeful of a trip to Europe, my husband became ill. It seemed travel was not to be, as caring for him became paramount. During the eleven years of illness before his death, the fates positioned two artist-friends in my life. One, well traveled, was interested in vacationing with me in Europe. The other, casually handed me a tiny ad from a magazine telling about an etching studio in Italy. I carefully added it to my wish list.
In addition to my strong desire to travel, I had even stronger impulses to return to my long neglected art of etching.
When Italy became a reality, my friend and I traveled as tourists and we were engulfed in the art and history of this amazing country. I became more interested than ever in the energies which drove such a rich culture, and what I experienced that first year wasn’t enough to answer my curiosities. I knew I had to create my own art in this land to better understand the unique force which has produced such works of genius over centuries.
The little ad given to me years earlier turned into a visit to the hill-town studio and the start of my relationship with this country and its people. My work there, in Italy, is a renewal of my creative spirit, a place where I am at one with my total self.
